Through my own studies, I discovered the practical applications of this approach in navigating everyday challenges, clarifying doubts, and avoiding conflicts rooted in miscommunication.

As an educator, I’d like to share the ‘Assertion and Reason’ framework with you, a valuable tool for effective problem-solving, clear communication, and conflict resolution in personal and professional spheres.

Let’s grasp the concept and application of it for problem-solving purposes.

Let’s imagine that we have two statements. The first one is referred to as the Assertion and the second one is known as the Reason.

For instance, when you share with your friend, ‘Honesty is the best policy’,
their response is, In the present times, individuals who prioritize sincerity face numerous challenges in their quest for survival, while those who are deceitful tend to experience rapid growth.

Considering the initial statement as an ‘Assertion’ and the subsequent statement as a ‘Reason’.

Rewrite the sentences in the format of assertion and reason.

Assertion (A): Honesty is the best policy.
Reason (R): In the present times, individuals who prioritize sincerity face numerous challenges in their quest for survival, while those who are deceitful tend to experience rapid growth.

Your goal is to assess the validity of each statement and determine if the Reason justifies the Assertion. You’ll have four options:

1. Both A and R are true, and R is a correct explanation of A.
2. Both A and R are true, but R doesn’t explain A.
3. A is true, but R is false.
4. A is false, but R is true.

Considering the aforementioned statements and available options, which option do you believe to be the correct answer?

The initial remark you made to your friend was “Honesty is the best policy”, is correct. Although your friend’s response, ‘in the present times, individuals who prioritize sincerity face numerous challenges in their quest for survival, while those who are deceitful tend to experience rapid growth’, is accurate, it is not the correct response to your statement. He could simply respond by saying; indeed, you are correct.
Instead of uttering those words, he opted to deliver a different statement that was correct but did not address the matter you had mentioned to him.

In your opinion, which option is the correct answer in this situation?

I believe that many of you would choose Option 2, as it satisfies the condition of both the Assertion being true and the Reason being true, but the Reason does not provide the correct explanation for the Assertion.

I’ve encountered numerous instances similar to this one, where individuals express contrasting views, resulting in relationship conflicts. Oftentimes, these disagreements escalate to fights and ultimately lead to the termination of the relationship.

Conclusion: Ensuring you identify the actual problem, rather than making it more complex, is of utmost importance. While you may have something significant to communicate, the other person might interpret it differently. This exercise helps you critically analyze the relationship between the two statements, clarify the topic and their response to steer the conversation back on track, leading to a conclusive resolution of the actual requirements and make informed judgments.
