Assertion and Reason

Assertion and Reason

Perhaps the elders may not be familiar with these terms i.e. “Assertion and Reason”. However the students and the teachers are very much familiar with it as its one of the type of question that is been asked in schools, board exams, competitive exams etc.

As a teacher when I was studying this type of question, I realized this can help to answer many questions in our real life which can eventually help to solve queries or to avoid any conflict due to wrong understanding and the sequences of answers that often people face in their family, neighbors, jobs etc.

So without taking much of your time, I am going to take you through the problem solving instrument called “Assertion and Reason”.

So, lets understand what it is and how to use it for problem solving –

Suppose there are two statements –
One we call as “Assertion”,
and, the second one is called as “Reason”.

For example, you are telling your friend, “Honesty is the best policy”.
But you friend replies, “these days, honest people struggle a lot to survive, but fake ones grow faster”.

If you consider first statement as “Assertion” and the second statement as “Reason”.

Now, rewrite the sentences in assertion and reason format :-
Assertion (A) : Honesty is the best policy.
Reason (R) : These days, honest people struggle a lot to survive, but fake ones grow faster.

Now you have to determine whether each statement is correct or not and if correct then the reason support the assertion or not or just one is correct and the other is wrong etc.

Once you understand the question, you will be provided with four options –

1) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
2) Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
3) A is true, but R is false.
4) A is false, but R is true.

assertion and reason

So, based on the above statements and options available, which option do you think is the right answer ?
Well, the first statement what you told to your friend, “Honesty is the best policy”, is correct.
But, second statement which your friend replied, “These days, honest people struggle a lot to survive, but fake ones grow faster”, which is also correct but not the correct answer to your statement. He could just reply, “yes you are right”.
So, instead of saying this, he told another statement which is right but not the answer to what you told to him.

Now, according to you which option should be the correct answer in this situation ?
I am sure, many of you could select the right option, i.e. Option 2, as Both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion.

I have seen many situations like this, where people are saying two different things, which cause conflict between relationships, many at time people end up fighting and ending relationship.

Its very important, you figure out the real problem, than complicating it. May be you want to tell something important, but the other person tell his/her own way. Tell them, what you are talking about and what they are responding, that way you can bring the conversation back to what it is suppose to be and then reach to a conclusion for what is really needed.
